modal verbs – could


  • ability to do sth.  (= to be able to) refer to the past – I could speak French, but I forgot.
  • permission to do sth. (= to be allowed to) refer to the past – I could travel with my friends when I was a kid.
  • polite question – refer to the future – Could I go to the cinema, please?
  • polite request – refer to the future – Could you wait a moment, please?
  • polite offer – refer to the future – I could pay your lunch tomorrow.
  • polite suggestion – refer to the future –  Could we go to the movies at the weekend?
  • possibility – refer to the future – It could get very hot in the next summer.
